Fond du Lac Jazz Festival to make new home at Windhover Center Oct 15-16
Fond du Lac, Wis. - Making a departure from previous years, The 28th Annual Fond du Lac Jazz Festival will be hosted by Windhover Center for the Arts October 15 & 16. According to Marian University Music Director and Artistic Director for the Fond du Lac Jazz Festival Brian Lydeen, the reason for the change of venue was" the outstanding acoustics and ambience of Windhover's Great Hall, the venue is a perfect fit for this year's festival."
Headlining this year's festival will be Eugene Rousseau, one of the leading saxophone performers and pedagogues in the world today. Rousseau has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras throughout the world, including BBC Orchestra of London, Austrian Radio Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, and the Indianapolis Symphony. In 1993 Rousseau performed the first ever saxophone recital at the Mozarteum Conservatory of Salzburg. His performances have been heard on NPR's Morning Edition.
Another added component for this year's festival will be an entire performance day devoted to Fond du Lac area educational entities that feature jazz groups. Commented Kevin Miller, executive director of the Fond du Lac Arts Council, which owns and operates Windhover Center, "with the rich traditions of our area school groups who perform jazz, we thought a unique way to showcase the students would be performances at this year's jazz festival."
Friday October 15 at 6 PM Woodworth Middle School Jazz band takes the stage to kick off the festival followed up by a vocal jazz ensemble that includes Fond du Lac High School V-Jam, UW-Fond du Lac and Marian University's vocal jazz groups, and a performance featuring the Marian University Jazz Band.
The headliner for Friday October 15 will feature the return to Windhover Center of Bobby Floyd and Bryan Olsheski. Both performers were featured last February at Windhover and played to a full house.
Bobby Floyd has performed extensively in the US, Canada, Europe and Japan. Touring events include major jazz festivals, concert halls, and numerous night clubs with Ray Charles, Jeff Tyzik, Chris Howes and Sarah Morrow. In his hometown, Columbus, Ohio, Bobby has been a feature with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, The Columbus Symphony, and ProMusica Chamber Orchestra sharing the stage with Dionne Warwick, Doc Severinson, Artural Sandaval, Faye Robinson and many others. He has also appeared in a variety of performances opening for Spyro Gyra, Smokey Robinson, Stanley Clark and George Duke, as well as accompanying other artists like David "Fathead" Newman, Bobby Watson, Greg Osby and Billy Hart.
Bobby has completed three recordings: Interpretations, Setting the Standards, and Floyd's Finest Gift. His next project, soon to be released, is a live performance recorded in Spain. Other accomplishments include recording and composing on several of Vince Andrews' and Chris Howes' projects. He has also recorded with Gerald Levert ("Groove On") and Faye Robinson ("Remembering Marian Anderson"). Additionally, he is featured on a Rusty Bryant album, Rusty Rides Again, which received five stars in Downbeat magazine.
Bobby Floyd currently performs with his band (Derek DiCenzo - Bass/Lead Guitar, Reggie Jackson - Drums). Members of the group add just the right mix of talent and experience to create the elements necessary to produce an appealing sound that goes well beyond live entertainment.
Sharing the stage with Floyd will be Bryan Olsheski, a 1995 graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Bryan Olsheski has shared the stage with some of the most famous names in jazz such as Joe Henderson, Kenny Garrett, Wes Anderson, Bill Holman, Slide Hampton, George Benson, Conrad Herwig and Jack McDuff.
