Lighthouse Big Band

The Lighthouse Big Band is a 16-piece "reading" big band consisting of local and regional musicians that formed roughly five years ago thanks to efforts and dedication of the late Jim Arthur of Fond du Lac. Initially, they would get together to "read through" or "sight read" big band music in an informal rehearsal / performance every first and third Tuesday at Jukebox Charlie's restaurant and bar in Fond du Lac. Chuck Boyd was good enough to provide a venue for the musicians to gather, play, and just generally "hang out". After a short while, the band moved to Lucky's (now JR's Sports Bar and Grill) and then came full circle to return to "Jukebox". During the summer of 2009, the band took up residence at the their new home, The Windhover Center for the Arts, and are genuinely excited about the new partnership.

The Lighthouse Big Band, directed by Marian University music professor Brian Lydeen, consists of many current and retired music educators from the elementary to college and university level. Everyone who plays in the group is on a volunteer basis and "plays for tips". All the members are committed to the endeavor out of their love for big band jazz and to preserve the art form in the Fond du Lac area. Although most of the musicians in the group live in Fond du Lac, some members travel from Oshkosh, Milwaukee, and the surrounding area. The members of the Lighthouse Big Band are very excited to perform as part of the Fond du Lac Jazz festival and especially to share the stage with world-renowned vocalist Kevin Mahogany.
